What it does

Work IQ Copilot MCP Server is a remote endpoint run by Microsoft as part of Agent 365. Its server ID is mcp_M365Copilot and Microsoft's reference page now gives it the display name "Copilot". An agent connected to it passes a question to Microsoft 365 Copilot, which looks through the organisation's Microsoft 365 content: SharePoint sites, OneDrive files, Outlook mail, Teams chats and other connected sources. Copilot answers from documents, PDFs, spreadsheets, presentations and messages the signed-in user can see.

The server has one tool. It takes a required message and can carry on an earlier exchange when given a conversationId; without one it opens a new conversation. A specific Copilot agent can be addressed with agentId, and files on SharePoint or OneDrive can be attached by URI so the answer is grounded in them. Microsoft describes it as the fallback for requests about mail, calendar or Teams when no workload-specific tool is connected.

There is nothing to install: each tenant has its own URL with its Microsoft Entra tenant ID in the path. The official MCP registry lists it as com.microsoft/workiq-m365copilot, version 1.0.0, published 25 March 2026, with a streamable-http remote and tenant_id as a required variable (registry entry).

Microsoft marks this server as preview and as part of a legacy set of app-specific Microsoft 365 servers (Copilot, Calendar, Mail, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, User, Word) kept for testing and backward compatibility. Its Agent 365 overview says these should not be used in production or new projects, and points to Work IQ MCP instead.

What it needs

A Microsoft 365 tenant with Microsoft 365 Copilot available to the signed-in user, the tenant's Microsoft Entra tenant ID for the URL, and a Microsoft Entra work account to sign in with. The server must be available in the tenant: administrators govern Agent 365 MCP servers and their tools under Agents > Tools in the Microsoft 365 admin center. An MCP client that supports streamable HTTP remotes.

Limits

Preview: Microsoft says tool names and parameters may change and warns against hard-coded dependencies. Microsoft calls it a legacy server kept for backward compatibility, not meant for production or new projects. It only searches and answers; it cannot send mail, edit files or post in Teams. Answers are limited to content the signed-in user can already reach in Microsoft 365. Microsoft says inclusion in its reference list does not mean a server is available in every tenant or agent-building tool.

Who it suits

Suits teams already testing Agent 365 who want an agent to search their own Microsoft 365 content through Copilot with a single read-only tool and no local install. Because Microsoft labels it legacy and preview, new projects should pick Work IQ MCP, which Microsoft recommends instead and which offers generic tools that can also create, update and delete Microsoft 365 items. For a local server, the microsoft/work-iq package (@microsoft/workiq) is a separate Work IQ MCP server and CLI that we also list. Not for users without a Microsoft 365 Copilot tenant.
