What it does

Work IQ Word MCP Server is a remote MCP server that Microsoft runs as part of its Agent 365 platform. It works on Word documents stored in a Microsoft 365 tenant's OneDrive and SharePoint, reached through Microsoft Graph. There is nothing to install: each tenant gets its own streamable HTTP address with the Entra tenant ID in the path, and its server ID inside Agent 365 is mcp_WordServer.

It has four tools. One creates a new .docx from HTML or plain text; one takes a SharePoint or OneDrive sharing link and returns the document's plain text, its metadata and all of its comments; two more add a comment or reply to an existing comment thread. The comment tools need the driveId and documentId that the read tool returns, so a typical flow is read first, then comment.

Microsoft now treats this server as legacy. Both the Word reference page and the Agent 365 MCP server overview say the app-specific Microsoft 365 servers (Copilot, Calendar, Mail, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, User and Word) are kept for testing and backward compatibility, should not be used in production or new projects, and are separate from the newer Work IQ MCP. It is also a preview feature, and Microsoft warns that tool names and parameters may change.

What it needs

A Microsoft 365 tenant with Microsoft Agent 365 access, and the server allowed by an administrator under Agents > Tools in the Microsoft 365 admin center. The documented setup for agents uses the Agent 365 CLI (a365 develop add-mcp-servers) and needs a Global Administrator to grant the OAuth scope to the agent blueprint (a365 setup all or a365 setup permissions mcp). Your Entra tenant ID goes into the endpoint URL.

Limits

Covers four actions only: new documents, reading text and comments, adding comments and replying. There is no tool to edit, rename, move or delete an existing document's body. New documents always land in the root of the signed-in user's OneDrive; with an empty fileName the name is generated as Document_yyyyMMdd_HHmms.docx. Reading needs a sharing URL, not a file path or search. Preview: Microsoft says tool names and parameters may change. Legacy: Microsoft says not to use it in production or new projects and points to Work IQ MCP instead. What appears in a tenant can vary by region, rollout, licensing and admin policy.

Who it suits

Suits developers already building on Microsoft Agent 365 who need an agent to draft a Word file into a user's OneDrive or review and comment on an existing document, and who want Microsoft to host the server and enforce tenant governance. It does not suit anyone without a Microsoft 365 tenant and admin cooperation, and it is a poor pick for new projects since Microsoft itself steers those to Work IQ MCP. Anyone who needs to edit document content in place, or to work on local .docx files, should look elsewhere. Sibling servers on the same platform cover Teams and Copilot search (we hold Work IQ Teams MCP Server and Work IQ Copilot MCP Server).

Tools 4

WordCreateNewDocument
Creates a .docx in the root of the user's OneDrive from HTML or plain text and returns its Graph DriveItem.
WordGetDocumentContent
Takes a SharePoint or OneDrive sharing link and returns the file's plain text, size, IDs and all comments.
WordCreateNewComment
Adds a comment to a document identified by driveId and documentId.
WordReplyToComment
Posts a reply to an existing comment by its commentId.
