What it does

World Monitor is a public dashboard that pulls together news, conflict, market, energy, climate, aviation, shipping, cyber and trade sources. This entry is its hosted MCP server at https://worldmonitor.app/mcp, which hands the same data to an assistant as tools. You can ask it for commodity and equity prices, armed conflict events with coordinates, a country's instability score, sanctions lists, chokepoint transit counts, current US import duties, prediction markets or a written brief on the world or one country.

Nearly everything is a read. There are a few analysis tools on top, for example one that classifies a headline by threat type and one that plays out what breaks downstream if a cable, pipeline or port goes down. The registry entry for version 1.50.0 counts 102 tools, up from the 89 the project's own description still gives. Twelve tools are wired to MCP Apps, so a host that supports ui:// widgets can show the result as an interactive panel. The server also publishes Agent Skills through the draft MCP skills extension.

Anyone can list the tools, and get_sources answers without an account. Every other data call needs sign-in, and the plan decides how. Pro and Pro Business accounts connect by OAuth only. The API plans and Enterprise can also send a wm_ key in the X-WorldMonitor-Key header. The repository ships a plugin for Google Antigravity and an extension for Gemini CLI. Each one sets up this server together with a second, public server that searches the documentation.

What it needs

World MonitorPaid planFree accounts can sign in but get 5 calls a day on a few cached tools. Pro is OAuth only, and a wm_ API key needs an API Starter plan or above.

Clients that sign in with OAuth open World Monitor's sign-in page on the first connection. Codex also needs `codex mcp login worldmonitor` after adding the server, and in Claude Code you run /mcp and pick Authenticate. On Claude Team and Enterprise an owner must add the connector under Organization settings first. The Antigravity plugin installs from a clone of the repository (`git clone https://github.com/koala73/worldmonitor`, then `agy plugin install ./worldmonitor`).

Limits

  • Rate limit Pro allows 50 counted calls per UTC day and Pro Business 250. The quota resets at 00:00 UTC, and a call over it gets HTTP 429.
  • Rate limit API Starter has 1,000 units a day and API Business 10,000, shared with REST. A live fetch costs 2 units, get_country_brief 3 and get_airspace 5.
  • Rate limit Per-minute burst is 60 calls per user on Pro, Pro Business and API Starter, and 300 on API Business.
  • Cost Free accounts get 5 calls a day on cache-read tools. Subscription tools return an upgrade error.
  • Limit Each user can hold 5 active OAuth tokens. Authorizing a sixth client silently revokes the oldest one.
  • Early release The docs list Gemini Developer Mode sign-in and token refresh as not yet tested. A client that reuses its first refresh token is disconnected on the second refresh.
  • Limit Gemini CLI installs from the latest release's source by default. Releases up to v2.11.6 lack the extension manifest, so the docs use --ref main.
  • Read only The tools read and analyse data. report_issue is the only one that files anything, a bug or data report sent to World Monitor.

Who it suits

A fit for analysts, journalists and traders who want an assistant to pull current conflict, risk, market and shipping data without wiring up dozens of feeds themselves. It is hosted and read-only, so there is nothing to run and nothing in your own systems it can change. The daily caps are low on the personal plans (50 counted calls on Pro), so heavy scripted workloads fit better on the API plans or the REST API, which the docs point to for batch work. Anyone who needs a key-based setup for a headless agent needs an API plan, since Pro and Pro Business accept OAuth only. Without a paid plan almost nothing beyond the source list answers.
