Trends Hub (npm package mcp-trends-hub) is a local stdio server that gathers what is currently popular on a set of public sites and hands it to an assistant as plain text. Most of its sources are Chinese platforms: hot-search and ranking lists from Weibo, Zhihu, Douyin, Toutiao, Bilibili, Douban, WeRead, 36Kr, Juejin, SSPAI, SMZDM, The Paper, NetEase and Tencent News. A few are English-language news feeds: BBC, The New York Times, The Verge and 9to5Mac. Each source is its own read-only tool, 21 in version 1.7.0; some take an option, such as the Bilibili tool's ranking section.
You can add your own feeds with TRENDS_HUB_CUSTOM_RSS_URL, a comma-separated list of RSS addresses. Each feed becomes an extra tool named after its host name (news.yahoo.com becomes news_yahoo_com, with a number added when two feeds share a host). The code fetches every custom feed once when the server starts and uses the feed's own title as the tool description (src/tools/__custom-rss.ts). TRENDS_HUB_HIDDEN_FIELDS removes chosen fields from the results, for every tool or for one tool, which helps keep replies short.
Results come back as one text block per item, with each field wrapped in a tag such as <title> or <link>. Empty fields are dropped (src/utils/tools.ts). No account or key is needed for any source.
| Runtime | Node.js 22+ |
|---|
Node.js 22 or newer, so that npx can fetch and run the mcp-trends-hub package. Outbound internet access to the sites it reads. No accounts, API keys or paid plans. Any MCP client that can start a stdio command.
Read-only: it fetches lists and feeds and cannot post, vote or search inside a site. Most sources are Chinese; only four English news feeds are built in. Built-in tools take no page or count setting. A tool that fails to load is dropped from the tool list without a message (tools load via Promise.allSettled, src/utils/tools.ts), so a custom RSS address that is unreachable or not RSS 2.0 at start-up gives no tool and no error. Stdio only; no hosted endpoint or HTTP mode. Several tools read sites' web interfaces with a browser user agent rather than an official API (e.g. Bilibili), so a site change can break a tool until the package is updated.
It suits someone who wants an assistant to summarise what is trending on Chinese social media and news sites, or to follow a few RSS feeds, with nothing to sign up for and nothing written anywhere. It is less useful for English-only news monitoring, since only four English feeds are built in. It cannot search for a topic across the web, so a web search server is a better fit for that. Because tools scrape public pages, it suits casual or research use more than anything that depends on a source staying up.
