Settings 1

NODE_ENV Optional: Set to production in the README's example config; not needed for the server to run.

What it does

stock-nse-india is an unofficial Node.js package that pulls equity, index, derivatives and market-wide data from the public website of the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE). Besides its library, REST/GraphQL API server and command line tool, the package ships a stdio MCP server, started with the `mcp` subcommand of its `nseindia` program.

Through the server an assistant can look up the list of listed symbols, a stock's price, trade and corporate details, intraday and historical prices, index data, option chains for indices, equities and commodities, market status, turnover and pre-open data, NSE circulars and merged daily reports, trading and clearing holidays, top gainers and losers and the most active stocks. One tool computes technical indicators (SMA, EMA, RSI, Bollinger Bands) on the fly, by default over 200 days of history with a 14-day RSI and a 20-day band; two others read OHLC candles from NSE's charting service, at 5-minute intraday intervals unless asked for daily bars or another interval.

The README counts 30 tools, but the tool file at version 1.4.0 (src/mcp/mcp-tools.ts) registers 32: the two charting tools, get_equity_chart_historical_data and get_equity_chart_symbol_info, are not in that count. Every tool only reads; nothing places orders or touches a trading account.

What it needs

RuntimeNode.js 18+

Node.js with npx. The README asks for Node.js 18 or later, but package.json at version 1.4.0 declares "engines": node >=20, so Node.js 20+ is the safe choice. Network access to nseindia.com and charting.nseindia.com. No NSE account or API key is needed.

Limits

Unofficial: it reads NSE's public website rather than a supported API, so tools can break when NSE changes its pages or blocks the requests. Covers NSE India only (no BSE or other exchanges) and only reads data; it cannot trade. The README's own config runs `npx stock-nse-india mcp` without `-y`; the command here adds it so npx does not wait for an install prompt. At startup the `mcp` command (src/cli/index.ts) prints status lines with console.log to standard output before the protocol starts, which a strict client may report as invalid messages.

Who it suits

Suits developers, traders and analysts who want an assistant to look up Indian stock, index and option-chain data, or run quick indicator checks, without an account or key. It runs locally and only reads public data. Pick something else if you need an exchange-supported or licensed data feed with uptime guarantees, data from markets outside NSE, or a server that can place orders through a broker.
