What it does

SharePoint (Agent 365) is a remote MCP server that Microsoft runs as part of Microsoft Agent 365. Each tenant reaches it at its own address, with the server ID mcp_SharePointRemoteServer, and it acts on SharePoint with the signed-in user's permissions.

Its tools cover three areas. For sites and libraries it can find sites, resolve one by path, walk subsites, list document libraries and browse folders. For files it can search, read and create small text and binary files, make folders, rename, delete, copy and move items (copy and move run in the background and are checked with checkOperationStatus), pull in a file from another SharePoint or OneDrive link, share items by email and set sensitivity labels. For lists it can create and delete lists, manage their items and columns, and share a list under a read, contribute or edit role.

By our count of Microsoft's reference page, it has 35 tools, and 19 of them create, change or delete or delete content or permissions. The page is marked preview, and Microsoft says these application-specific Microsoft 365 servers are kept for backward compatibility: it points new projects to Work IQ MCP instead.

What it needs

A Microsoft 365 tenant with SharePoint and access to Microsoft Agent 365; your tenant ID goes into the server address. An administrator must make the server available in the Tools registry of the Microsoft 365 admin center, and availability varies by tenant, region, rollout, licensing and policy. Users sign in with their Microsoft work account.

Limits

Preview: Microsoft may change tool names and parameters, and preview features are not meant for production. Microsoft calls this server a legacy option kept for backward compatibility and says not to use it for new projects. Reading and creating files is capped at 5 MB. Searches return the top 20 results by default, and folder browsing returns up to 20 items. uploadFileFromUrl accepts only SharePoint or OneDrive source links. Deleting a list cannot be undone, and deleting a column erases its data.

Who it suits

Suits teams already on Microsoft 365 and Agent 365 who want an agent to read and organise SharePoint content, including lists and sharing, without running anything themselves. It is not for production or new builds by Microsoft's own advice; those should use Work IQ MCP. It also does not suit anyone outside a Microsoft 365 tenant, or work on large files above 5 MB.
