Settings 1

DEVICONS_API Optional: Address of another Devicons API deployment for the local server to read from; defaults to the public API.

What it does

The Devicons MCP server exposes the Devicons icon collection to coding assistants. Devicons is an open-source set of more than 1,300 logos for programming languages, frameworks, tools, cloud services and brands, also shipped as an icon font, an SVG sprite and React, Vue and Svelte component packages.

Through four read-only tools an assistant can search the set by name, alias or tag, list the categories and their icons, and pull one icon's details: every variant's colour and monochrome SVG address, the main SVG markup, and the install command plus import code for React, Vue, Svelte or plain HTML. The point is that the assistant uses real icon slugs and component names instead of guessing them when it adds a tech-stack strip or a footer of social logos to a project.

It comes two ways. The Devicons project hosts it at https://devicons.io/api/mcp over Streamable HTTP with no sign-in, and the same tools run locally over stdio with `npx -y devicons mcp` from the devicons npm package. The local copy is not offline: it calls the public Devicons API, and the DEVICONS_API setting points it at another deployment of that API.

What it needs

To run it yourselfNode.js 20+

Hosted: an MCP client that supports Streamable HTTP remote servers. Local: Node.js 20 or later to run the devicons package with npx. Either way, outbound HTTPS access to devicons.io (or your own deployment set through DEVICONS_API). No account or key.

Limits

Read-only: it returns icon data and code but does not write files into a project; the assistant or the CLI's add command does that. Covers only the Devicons collection. search_icons returns at most 50 results per call and get_category at most 200. The local server still needs network access to the Devicons API, so it does not work behind a firewall that blocks devicons.io.

Who it suits

Suits front-end developers who want an assistant to drop correct logos into a page or component: tech-stack sections, integration grids, social footers, especially in React, Vue or Svelte projects using the @dev.icons packages. The hosted endpoint needs nothing installed and no key; the npx copy is for clients that only speak stdio. Since it is read-only and only reaches a public icon API, there is little to configure. Look elsewhere for general icon sets (UI glyphs rather than logos) or for working on design files.

Tools 4

search_icons
Finds icons by name, alias or tag, optionally within a category, returning ranked matches with slugs and SVG addresses.
get_icon
Returns one icon's metadata, all variant SVG addresses, the SVG markup and install plus import code for a chosen framework.
list_categories
Lists every icon category with its slug and icon count.
get_category
Lists the icons in one category, most recognisable first.
