The Gusto MCP Server is a hosted endpoint run by Gusto at https://mcp.api.gusto.com. An admin connects it to an assistant with OAuth, picks which data categories to share, and the assistant can then read and change that Gusto company: employees and contractors, payrolls and pay schedules, departments and locations, time records and time-off requests, and payroll reports returned as CSV.
It goes beyond reading records. Tools can edit and submit an unprocessed payroll, add or change one employee or contractor at a time, enter hours, and walk a new business through Gusto signup: creating the company, linking a funding bank account through Plaid, preparing an EIN (Form SS-4) or S-Corp election (Form 2553), and paying for an EIN filing through a Stripe checkout link. A few tools give estimates (S-Corp savings, a reasonable owner salary, the R&D tax credit) that the docs say are not tax advice.
Gusto's tool reference lists 72 tools. List tools page at 25 results by default and up to 100 with `per`, and take an `include` parameter to return only chosen fields. For testing before connecting real company data, the docs name a separate demo endpoint, https://mcp.api.gusto-demo.com, used with a demo company from dev.gusto.com. Gusto points developers building on its API to a different server, the Embedded Dev Assistant MCP.
What it needs
A Gusto account with global/full admin rights on the company being connected. An MCP client that can add a remote server and sign in with OAuth (PKCE); the docs say Claude needs a Pro or Max plan and Cursor a Pro+ plan for this. In Gemini CLI, run /mcp auth gusto after adding the server to finish sign-in.
Limits
Each connection reaches only the data categories chosen at sign-in; changing them means disconnecting and reconnecting. Rate limits apply and are not published: an over-limit call gets a 429 with Retry-After. search_workers_comp_class covers Washington and Wyoming only. file_scorp_election prepares Form 2553 but the owner must still mail it to the IRS. The tax estimate tools are labelled as estimates, not tax advice. Tools that need an SSN or bank numbers open a Gusto or Plaid page instead of taking them in chat. Gusto's docs warn that the assistant can misread data and that answers should be checked in Gusto.
Who it suits
Suits owners and admins of a Gusto company who want to ask about headcount, payroll costs, contractors or time off, prepare and submit payroll, or set up a new company from an assistant, without running anything locally. Because it can submit payroll and change staff records, it fits people who will confirm each tool call. Developers building an app on the Gusto API are pointed by Gusto to its Embedded Dev Assistant MCP instead. Those not on Gusto, or without admin rights, cannot use it.
