It connects a coding assistant to a Genkit application in the project folder it is started in. Genkit is the open source framework for building AI features, made by Firebase, part of Google.
Through the server an assistant can start, stop and restart the app's runtime (for example npm run dev or go run .), list the Genkit flows in the project along with their input schemas, run a flow with JSON input, and read the execution trace of a run span by span. It can also fetch a usage guide and list, search and read the Genkit documentation for JavaScript, Go or Python.
It needs Node.js and the Genkit CLI, installed globally with npm install -g genkit-cli or used through npx genkit mcp. The docs show setup for Gemini CLI, Cursor, Claude Code, Windsurf and Cline. Set the working directory (cwd) to the Genkit project. The docs mark the server as experimental and say it may change without notice.
