Settings 4

EXTERNAL_DOC_HOST_ALLOWLIST Optional: Self-hosting only: newline-separated hosts that fetchExternalDocumentation may reach; the docs advise setting it in production. For fetchExternalDocumentation.
EXTERNAL_DOC_HOST_BLOCKLIST Optional: Self-hosting only: newline-separated hosts that are always refused. For fetchExternalDocumentation.
Set together: web-bot-auth
WEB_BOT_AUTH_KEY secret Optional: Self-hosting only: Ed25519 private key (JWK) used to sign requests to external hosts; requests go unsigned without it. For fetchExternalDocumentation.
SIGNATURE_AGENT Optional: Self-hosting only: origin advertised in signed requests, https://sosumi.ai by default. For fetchExternalDocumentation.

What it does

Apple's developer documentation is rendered by JavaScript, so a plain fetch of a developer.apple.com page gives an assistant almost nothing to read. sosumi.ai reads the structured data behind those pages and returns clean Markdown. Through MCP it offers four tools: search Apple's documentation, fetch an API reference or Human Interface Guidelines page by path, fetch the transcript of a WWDC or other Apple video, and fetch a Swift-DocC site hosted somewhere other than Apple (for example a package's documentation on GitHub Pages).

Most people use the free hosted endpoint at https://sosumi.ai/mcp, which runs on Cloudflare Workers and needs no account or key. In Claude Code you can also add it as a plugin from the repository's own marketplace, which brings the agent skill along with the server. The project is listed in the official MCP Registry as `ai.sosumi/sosumi`, with the hosted endpoint as its only remote. Besides MCP there is a plain HTTP form (swap developer.apple.com for sosumi.ai in a URL), a command-line tool in the npm package @nshipster/sosumi (`sosumi fetch`, `sosumi search`), and a skill file for coding agents.

The README says the endpoint speaks both Streamable HTTP and SSE. In the source, though, /mcp is served by a Streamable HTTP transport and there is no separate legacy SSE route (src/index.ts). The same file also publishes a server card at /.well-known/mcp/server-card.json for clients that discover servers that way. Outside development mode, responses pass through a cache set to 24 hours. It is an independent project by NSHipster and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Apple.

What it needs

Runs onmacOS, Windows, Linux

For the hosted endpoint: an MCP client that speaks Streamable HTTP, or Node.js to run the `npx -y mcp-remote https://sosumi.ai/mcp` stdio bridge the docs give for other clients. No account or key. To run it yourself: Node.js 20+ and npm; `sosumi serve` (from `npm i -g @nshipster/sosumi`) starts the Worker locally through `npx -y wrangler@^4 dev`, so it downloads Wrangler on first use and listens on http://localhost:8787 by default (change with `--port`).

Limits

  • Not covered Reads only what Apple publishes on developer.apple.com plus public Swift-DocC sites; pages behind an Apple sign-in are out of reach
  • Limit External Swift-DocC hosts can refuse it through robots.txt (user-agent sosumi-ai) or an X-Robots-Tag: noai header
  • Rate limit The hosted service is rate limited to keep load on Apple's servers reasonable
  • Limit Responses may come from a cache kept for up to 24 hours outside development mode (src/index.ts)
  • Limit The makers state that use must comply with Apple's Terms of Use and must not be used for redistribution
  • Read only Every tool only fetches and converts documentation; nothing can be changed through it

Behind a corporate proxy the docs advise setting HTTP_PROXY/HTTPS_PROXY on the mcp-remote bridge.

Who it suits

Suits anyone writing Swift or building for Apple platforms who wants an assistant to check current Apple API docs, HIG guidance or WWDC sessions instead of relying on what it remembers. Because the hosted endpoint needs no sign-in and every tool only reads, it is a low-effort add to Claude Code, VS Code, Cursor or GitHub Copilot for Xcode. Teams that do not want queries going to a third-party service can run their own copy with `sosumi serve` or deploy it to Cloudflare, and should set `EXTERNAL_DOC_HOST_ALLOWLIST`. For documentation outside the Apple and Swift-DocC world, pick a different docs server.
