What it does

DeepWiki is Cognition's service that builds wiki-style documentation for GitHub repositories. This hosted MCP server, run by Cognition at mcp.deepwiki.com, exposes that documentation to an assistant: it can fetch the table of topics DeepWiki holds for a repository, pull the documentation pages themselves, or put a free-form question about a repository and get back an answer generated by Cognition's Ask Devin feature, grounded in that repository's code and wiki.

Nothing is installed: a client points at https://mcp.deepwiki.com/mcp over Streamable HTTP, with no account and no key. A legacy SSE endpoint at /sse still answers, but Cognition marks it as being deprecated and recommends /mcp.

It covers public repositories only. Cognition's separate Devin MCP server (mcp.devin.ai) shares the same three documentation tools but adds private repositories, a list_available_repos tool, and session, playbook and knowledge management; that one needs a Devin account and API key (Devin MCP docs, comparison table).

What it needs

An MCP client that can connect to a remote Streamable HTTP server (or legacy SSE) and network access to mcp.deepwiki.com. No account, API key or paid plan. In Devin Desktop the URL goes in a serverUrl field; most other clients use url, and the wrong field name makes the client ignore the server silently.

Limits

Public GitHub repositories only; private repositories need the Devin MCP server and a Devin API key. Answers from ask_question are generated by Cognition's model and can be wrong. The /sse endpoint is legacy and being deprecated. No tool to list which repositories DeepWiki has indexed (Devin MCP has list_available_repos).

Who it suits

Suits developers who want an assistant to understand an unfamiliar open-source codebase without cloning it, at no cost and with no sign-in. It only reads, so it is a low-commitment addition. Teams that need the same lookups on private code should use Cognition's Devin MCP server instead, which needs a Devin account. The community deepwiki-mcp scraper by regenrek is no longer working by its own README and points here.
