Opens the app, which asks before it adds the server.
Its sign-in lets no client register itself: a client signs in only with an app (a client ID) registered with its maker first, so these snippets work only after that step.

The GitHub MCP Server is GitHub's own MCP server. It lets an assistant browse and search code and files in any repository the user can access, look at commits, branches, tags and releases, create and update issues and pull requests, review pull requests, follow GitHub Actions runs and their logs, and read security findings such as code scanning, Dependabot and secret scanning alerts. Optional toolsets cover discussions, gists, notifications, projects, labels, organisations, stargazers, governance rulesets and Copilot.
Tools are grouped into toolsets; by default context, repos, issues, pull requests and users are on, and others can be enabled with GITHUB_TOOLSETS or individual tools chosen. A read-only mode offers only tools that do not change anything, and a lockdown mode filters content from public repositories written by people without push access, to reduce prompt-injection risk.
GitHub hosts it at https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/, which signs in with OAuth in clients that support remote servers. It can also run locally from the Docker image ghcr.io/github/github-mcp-server (or a built binary), signing in through a browser OAuth flow or with a personal access token in GITHUB_PERSONAL_ACCESS_TOKEN. GitHub Enterprise Server and ghe.com are supported.
