What it does

This is the MCP server that ClickUp runs itself at https://mcp.clickup.com/mcp. There is nothing to download: a client connects over HTTP, the user signs in to ClickUp in the browser, and picks the Workspace the assistant may use. From then on the assistant works inside that Workspace with the user's own permissions, so it can only do what that person could do in the ClickUp app.

Its documented tool set covers searching the Workspace, creating and editing tasks (one at a time or in bulk), setting Custom Fields, tags, links and dependencies between tasks, moving tasks between Lists, attaching files, reading and posting task comments, timers and time entries, time-in-status reports, the Space/Folder/List structure, member lookup, Chat channels and messages, and Docs pages.

One thing the docs pages do not spell out: the endpoint's sign-in metadata (its /.well-known/oauth-protected-resource document) offers just two OAuth scopes, read and write, and names api.clickup.com as the origin it serves, so the endpoint sits in front of ClickUp's public API rather than being a separate data store. The overview page also says MCP calls share the per-minute budget of the public API.

What it needs

A ClickUp account and Workspace; the docs say the MCP server is available on every ClickUp plan. A client that speaks remote MCP over HTTP with OAuth 2.1 and PKCE, or Node.js to run the mcp-remote bridge (npx) for clients that only start local commands, such as Claude's free desktop plan. In Claude Code, run /mcp in a session to finish sign-in. In ChatGPT Team, Enterprise and Edu workspaces only owners and admins can add it.

Limits

Sign-in is OAuth only; the FAQ says personal API keys and access tokens are not accepted. Without the Everything AI add-on, tool calls are capped per Workspace and per client over a rolling 24 hours: 100 on Free Forever, 300 Core/Unlimited, 1,000 Business, 2,500 Business Plus, 5,000 Enterprise, 25,000 Enterprise Plus; a capped call returns RATE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED and the window cannot be reset. ClickUp says limits and features may change. It cannot search apps linked through Connected Search. The docs disagree on deletion: the FAQ says there are no delete tools, while the tools page lists Delete task.

Who it suits

Suits ClickUp users who want an assistant to plan, update and report on work in their own Workspace without running anything locally, and who are fine with a vendor-hosted endpoint and OAuth sign-in. Free-plan Workspaces get only 100 calls a day, which heavy agent use can exhaust. Anyone who needs to sign in with a ClickUp API key could look at the third-party ClickUp MCP Server by taazkareem (@taazkareem/clickup-mcp-server), which we also list: its README says it still accepts an API key and Team ID, but it has moved to a paid licence.
