What it does

BlockRun MCP is BlockRun's own local stdio server that puts the services of its paid gateway behind one set of tools. Through it an assistant can call other LLMs, generate images, video, music and speech, run Exa neural search or Grok live web search, read prediction-market data from Polymarket, Kalshi and others, look up crypto, FX and commodity prices, query DEX pairs and DefiLlama, send raw JSON-RPC to 40 chains, start code in a hosted Modal sandbox, place outbound voice calls, and place or cancel real orders on Polymarket.

Each call is billed one of two ways. By default the server creates a local wallet on first use and pays per request in USDC on Solana or Base via the x402 protocol, with no account. Alternatively a BlockRun account key (BLOCKRUN_API_KEY) routes calls through api.blockrun.ai and draws on card- or wire-funded credit. A few tools are free (crypto prices, DEX prices, the model catalogue, the free chat tier); the rest cost from fractions of a cent to several dollars a call.

Version 0.54.4 registers 19 tools. A `--profile` flag or BLOCKRUN_MCP_PROFILE exposes a smaller set (media, trading, research, chat) to cut the context the tool schemas take; per src/profiles.ts the profile name is matched case-insensitively and with surrounding spaces ignored, and an unknown name falls back to the full set with a warning on stderr. At start-up (src/index.ts) the server scans client config files for leaked wallet keys and warns, and checks the npm registry for a newer version with a 3-second timeout.

What it needs

Runtime	Node.js 20+

Node.js 20.19 or newer with npx. Funds to pay for calls: either USDC on Solana (default for new installs) or Base sent to the wallet the server creates, or a BlockRun account key from user.blockrun.ai topped up by card or wire. Polymarket trading needs wallet mode and funds moved into a Polymarket deposit wallet through the tool's setup and fund steps.

Limits

Most tools are paid per call. Polymarket trading does not work in API-key mode, which has no keypair to sign; blockrun_defi and blockrun_modal are not served when paying from a Solana wallet. Orders are capped at $25 each by default (POLYMARKET_MAX_BET_USD) and need confirm:true. The spend-approval dialog (BLOCKRUN_CONFIRM_SPEND=on) fails open on clients without MCP elicitation, e.g. Codex CLI, Gemini CLI and Windsurf; BLOCKRUN_BUDGET_LIMIT is an in-memory cap that resets on restart. Equity price quotes were withdrawn on 2026-09-05, the Surf tool was removed in 0.49.0, and some rails still charge a timed-out media job. A cold first npx start can exceed a client's 30-second startup timeout.

Who it suits

Suits someone who wants one install to reach many paid data and generation services, pay per use without signing up with each vendor, and is comfortable holding USDC or prepaying BlockRun credit. It also suits agents that should read prediction-market odds and act on them with a capped, confirm-gated trade. Pick something else when you want free access, want calls to go straight to a provider under your own account rather than through BlockRun's gateway, or only need one of these services; a server from that provider avoids the per-call charges and the crypto wallet.

Runs locally over stdio but sends every service call to BlockRun's gateway (or api.blockrun.ai in key mode), which passes it to the upstream providers. In wallet mode it stores plaintext private keys in ~/.blockrun/.session and .solana-session (mode 0600), mirrored to the OS keychain by default, and signs USDC payments with them; the same key controls the Polymarket deposit wallet. Paid calls proceed without asking unless BLOCKRUN_CONFIRM_SPEND is on and the client supports elicitation, and no budget cap is set by default. Tools can place real bets, run code in a hosted sandbox and place phone calls. By default Polymarket orders go through BlockRun's Finland relay to get past Polymarket's IP geoblock; its README says complying with Polymarket's terms where you are is your responsibility.
