Opens the app, which asks before it adds the server.

Or add it by command or config

Its sign-in lets no client register itself: a client signs in only with an app (a client ID) registered with its maker first, so these snippets work only after that step.

What it does

This is the edition of Microsoft's Power BI Authoring MCP server that Microsoft runs. You connect to it over Streamable HTTP at https://api.fabric.microsoft.com/v1/mcp/powerbi/authoring. There is nothing to install, and Microsoft handles updates. Microsoft labels the hosted edition as preview. The local edition, @microsoft/powerbi-modeling-mcp, is generally available.

After you name a semantic model and the Fabric workspace it lives in, the agent can create, change and delete tables, columns, measures, relationships, hierarchies, calculation groups, perspectives, partitions and security roles. It can also make bulk edits such as renames, translations and DAX refactoring, check a model against modeling best practices, and run DAX queries to test measures. Tools are grouped by object type. Microsoft's page does not list them; it suggests asking the agent what the server can do.

The hosted edition differs from the local edition (power-bi-authoring-mcp-server-local) in several ways. It reaches only models in Fabric workspaces, not Power BI Desktop or PBIP/TMDL files on your machine. It has no transaction or trace tools. It signs in only as the user, through Microsoft Entra ID, with no service principal option. It is also stateful: it keeps the model connection in a session, so the client has to send back the mcp-Session-Id header from initialization on every request. Microsoft recommends the hosted edition when your setup supports it, and warns against registering both editions at the same time because their tool sets overlap.

What it needs

A Microsoft Entra ID account with Write permission on the semantic model (Build permission only allows DAX queries). The model must be in a Fabric workspace. A Fabric administrator must turn on the tenant setting 'Users can use the Power BI Model Context Protocol server endpoint'. You also need an MCP client in agent mode that supports Entra OAuth without dynamic client registration (or an Entra app you register yourself) and that keeps the mcp-Session-Id header. In GitHub Copilot, enterprise accounts have the 'MCP servers in Copilot' option off by default.

Limits

Preview. Works only on semantic models; it cannot edit report pages or diagram layouts. DAX query results are capped at 100,000 rows. No transaction or trace tools. Cannot reach Power BI Desktop or PBIP/TMDL files on disk. Entra ID does not support dynamic OAuth client registration, so clients that depend on it cannot connect. Clients that open a new session on every call lose the model connection.

Who it suits

Suits Power BI developers who edit semantic models published to Fabric workspaces, want nothing to install, and can get the tenant setting enabled. It is also the choice on a Mac, where the local edition does not run. Pick the local edition (power-bi-authoring-mcp-server-local, @microsoft/powerbi-modeling-mcp) if you work against Power BI Desktop or PBIP/TMDL files, need a service principal for CI, need transactions or traces, or use a client that cannot complete Entra sign-in.
