What it does

OpenKnowledge is a local-first Markdown editor and knowledge base from Inkeep, available as a desktop app (macOS, Windows, Linux) and as a local web app and CLI installed from npm. It works on any folder of markdown or mdx files: codebases, wikis, Obsidian vaults, LLM wikis or plain notes, kept as plain files and version-controlled in git.

Alongside the editor it ships an MCP server and skills for agents. The MCP surface has 19 tools: a read-only shell over the workspace, ranked search, link views (backlinks, dead links, orphans), content linting and audits, version history, and tools to write, edit, move and delete documents, folders, templates, skills and assets. It can also save project-wide checkpoints, restore old versions, and find, import and install skills from skills.sh.

The Claude Code plugin starts it with npx @inkeep/open-knowledge@latest mcp; running ok init in a project wires it up for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Codex, OpenCode and OpenClaw. It needs Node.js 24+ and git. A running OpenKnowledge server can also be reached over Streamable HTTP at /mcp, for remote agents behind an authenticating proxy.
