Nuclear is a free, open-source desktop music player that streams music from plugin-provided sources, with artist and album pages, queue management, favorites, playlists, themes and a plugin store. It includes a built-in MCP server that lets an assistant drive the player, doing what a user can do in the app.
The server exposes four tools that follow a discovery pattern to save tokens: list the methods in a domain (Queue, Playback, Metadata, Favorites, Playlists, Dashboard, Providers, Lyrics), get the details of one method, describe a data type such as Track or Playlist, and call a method with its parameters. That way an assistant can search for music, build and reorder the queue, play and pause, manage playlists and favorites, and fetch lyrics.
Install Nuclear from its releases page (Windows, macOS, Linux), then turn the server on in Settings, Integrations. It listens on http://127.0.0.1:8800/mcp over Streamable HTTP (trying ports up to 8809 if 8800 is taken); add that URL to your MCP client. An optional agent skill teaches the discovery workflow.
