It needs GOOGLE_MAPS_API_KEY. Replace each <NAME> with your value.

Required: Google Maps Platform API key; also accepted as --apikey or, in HTTP mode, the X-Google-Maps-API-Key header. |

GOOGLE_MAPS_ENABLED_TOOLS |
Optional: Comma-separated list of tool names to register; unset or * registers all 18. |
MCP_SERVER_PORT |
Optional: HTTP mode port, 3000 by default (or --port). |
MCP_SERVER_HOST |
Optional: HTTP mode bind address, 0.0.0.0 by default (or --host). |
An independent MCP server, published by cablate rather than Google, that calls Google Maps Platform APIs with your own API key. It covers place search (text, nearby and along a route), place details, geocoding in single and batch form, directions, distance matrices, stop-order optimisation, elevation, time zones, weather, air quality and static map images. A few tools bundle several calls together: exploring an area by category, comparing candidate places, and a grid-based local search ranking check aimed at local SEO work.
The same package runs in three ways: as an MCP server over stdio for desktop clients, as a self-hosted Streamable HTTP server at /mcp, or as a command-line program (`exec`, `batch-geocode`, `doctor`) that Codex and Claude Code plugins call through bundled Skills without any MCP setup. `GOOGLE_MAPS_ENABLED_TOOLS` limits which tools are registered.
One thing the README does not spell out: started without `--stdio`, the program launches the HTTP server, not stdio, on port 3000 and bound to 0.0.0.0 (all interfaces) unless `--host` or `MCP_SERVER_HOST` says otherwise (src/cli.ts at v0.0.69). The README's HTTP example passes `--host 127.0.0.1` explicitly. It also reads a `.env` file from the current directory and from the package folder at start.

Node.js 18 or newer (the command uses npx). A Google Maps Platform API key from a Google Cloud project with billing enabled, with the APIs your tools use turned on: Places API (New) and Routes API for most place and route work, often Geocoding API, plus others for weather, air quality, elevation and the rest. Calls are billed to that project.
All 18 tools only read; none changes anything in Google or on disk. Results are whatever the enabled Google APIs return; the makers note weather is not available in every region and that an answer is no proof of opening status, accessibility or safety. Route optimisation handles up to 25 stops. Apps that show Places reviews, photos or summaries must follow Google's attribution and storage rules. Without `--stdio` the program serves HTTP instead of stdio, so a client config must keep that flag.
Suits developers who want an assistant to plan trips, check routes and travel times, enrich addresses or audit local search rankings, and who already have, or will set up, a billed Google Cloud project. The HTTP mode with per-request key headers fits a shared self-hosted deployment. It is not made by Google; anyone who wants to avoid Google Maps billing or does not want to hold a Google Cloud key should look elsewhere.
